Despite the Federal High Court in Kano ordering the state government and the House of Assembly to maintain the status quo and refrain from enforcing the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Law, 2024 (1445 A.H.), which impacts all emirate council offices and institutions established under the Kano State Emirate Council Law, 2019 (1441 A.H.), Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has reinstated Sanusi as the Emir of Kano.
The official appointment letter was issued on Friday at the Kano State Government House.
On March 9, 2020, former governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje dethroned Sanusi, accusing him of insubordination and political interference, and appointed Aminu Ado-Bayero as his replacement.
Before his time as Emir, Sanusi had a notable career in banking, culminating in his appointment as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria in 2009.
Sanusi, who is the spiritual leader of the Tijanniyah Sufi order in Nigeria, began his reign on June 8, 2014, as the 14th Emir of Kano, succeeding his great-uncle, Ado Bayero.
He was appointed Emir by former governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, less than four months after being removed as the CBN governor by former President Goodluck Jonathan.
